Etsy vs. Shopify for Digital Products: What Converts Better

We craft templates that simplify your workflow and deliver real results

Analyse 2025 performance data from identical digital templates sold simultaneously on Etsy and Shopify. Discover how Shopify generated 19% higher revenue and a 4.7% conversion rate and learn how shifting from rented platform algorithms to owned Google SEO shapes long-term store resilience.

A 2025 Case Study from CraftedCharts

Most "Etsy vs. Shopify" articles compare platform fees and theoretical pros and cons. We can do something most of them can't: compare real performance, because we sell the exact same 132 digital templates, same designs, same files, same photos, on both platforms at the same time. Below is the full 2025 data: traffic, conversion rate, and revenue, along with the methodology so you can judge the comparison yourself.

The setup: same products, same prices, different platforms

Before the numbers, the ground rules for why this comparison is fair (and where it isn't):

  • 132 identical products listed on both platforms: same Canva/PDF files, same product photography, same price range (€4–9 per template)

  • The only variable we changed on purpose was the copy. Etsy listings are written to win Etsy's on-platform search, where a shopper sees 40 competing shops on one results page. Shopify product pages are written for Google ranking and for a shopper who, once they land on the page, isn't seeing a wall of competitors, so the copy leans harder into UX and depth instead of a fight for the click.

  • What we didn't control for, and want to be upfront about: our Etsy shop has been live since 2022. Our Shopify store launched in 2025, and migrating and optimizing the full 132-product catalog took about two months, meaning all 132 products weren't fully live on Shopify until December 2025. Etsy's 2025 numbers reflect a full year of a 3-year-old shop; Shopify's numbers reflect a partial year of a brand-new one. If anything, that makes Shopify's results below more notable, not less, but it's not an apples-to-apples storefront age comparison, and we're not going to pretend it is.

Etsy views declined noticeably starting in September 2025, following changes to Etsy's search algorithm. That drop was the direct trigger for our decision to shift focus toward Shopify.

78% of our Etsy traffic came from Etsy itself (on-platform search, browse, and Etsy's own marketing), and only 22% came from anything we did ourselves (direct links, social, ads). That's the core structural difference between the two platforms: on Etsy, you're renting attention that the platform controls.

We also ran Etsy Ads heavily throughout 2024 as a deliberate test. They didn't move sales in a meaningful way relative to spend, so we largely stopped using them in 2025.

Where Shopify traffic actually came from

Almost 90% organic search, with most of the remainder being direct traffic from product links we shared on Facebook, Twitter/X, and Pinterest ourselves. No paid traffic at all.

Etsy has a 2+ year head start

With almost identical traffic volume and identical pricing, Shopify converted better and earned more per visit, despite carrying the full catalog for only the last month of the year against a 3-year-old, fully-indexed Etsy shop. The gap isn't about which platform has more shoppers walking by; both funneled a similar number of visits. It's about who owns the page the shopper lands on, and what that page is optimized to do once they're there.

Why the same products perform differently

Three structural differences explain most of the gap, in our view:

  1. Who you're optimizing against. On Etsy, your listing sits in a search results grid next to dozens of near-identical competitors; the copy has to win a split-second scan. On Shopify, once someone lands on your page from Google, there's no competing seller pulling their attention away, so the page can do more selling instead of just more shouting.

  2. Who owns the traffic channel. 78% of our Etsy traffic depended on Etsy's own algorithm and internal marketing, which is exactly the layer that shifted against us in September 2025. Our Shopify traffic is 90% organic Google search that we built and control directly through on-page SEO.

  3. Ad spend efficiency. A full year of testing Etsy Ads in 2024 didn't produce a proportional sales lift. Every euro of Shopify's revenue above came from organic search and free social links, with zero ad spend.

What this data doesn't prove

To be clear about the limits here, because a data study is only as trustworthy as its caveats:

  • This isn't a claim that Shopify beats Etsy for every seller. Etsy's internal search still sends real, free traffic that a brand-new standalone store doesn't have on day one.

  • Our Shopify numbers benefit from 3 years of product/photo development already paid for on Etsy; a seller starting from zero on Shopify won't replicate this timeline.

  • We didn't run a controlled A/B test with randomized traffic. This is a real-business comparison, not a lab experiment.

FAQ

Is Shopify actually better than Etsy for digital products?

Based on our 2025 data, our Shopify store converted about 27% better and earned about 19% more revenue than our Etsy shop with nearly identical traffic and identical pricing. But Etsy still supplied a comparable volume of traffic with far less ongoing SEO work on our part, so "better" depends on whether you value a built-in audience or full control over your traffic.

Why did you start moving away from Etsy in 2025?

Etsy's views dropped noticeably starting in September 2025 following algorithm changes on the platform, which pushed us to accelerate our Shopify migration.

Did Etsy Ads help sales?

Not proportionally to spend. We tested them heavily through 2024 and stopped using them in 2025 after the results didn't justify the cost.

Are the products really identical on both platforms?

Yes, same files, same photography, same €4–9 pricing. The only intentional difference is the written copy, tailored to how each platform's search actually works.
