The 25 verbs are split by two conjugation groups, (E-type) and (И-type), rather than by infinitive ending the way our Spanish, Portuguese, and French charts do, or by regular/irregular the way German and English do. That's not a stylistic choice, it reflects how Russian verbs actually work. The infinitive ending alone (mostly -ать or -ить) is a rough guide but not a reliable rule; several common verbs break the pattern their ending would suggest. Grouping by which conjugation a verb actually follows, rather than trusting the ending to predict it, is what makes the chart usable in practice rather than misleading.

What repeats across every verb is the six-person layout, same rows, same structure, regardless of which group a verb belongs to. What changes is the specific ending pattern, First conjugation verbs take -ю, -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ют, Second conjugation verbs take -ю, -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ят. Seeing both patterns on the same page, side by side, makes the actual difference, the vowel in the ending, "е" versus "и", visible at a glance instead of something you have to hold in memory across two separate reference points.

This chart fits a beginner working toward A1-A2 proficiency who wants a single page to check against instead of paging through a grammar book each time a verb's conjugation slips your mind. It also works for tutors and teachers who want a ready-made reference sheet rather than building one from scratch for each lesson. It's a weaker fit once you're past this stage and need aspectual pairs (perfective/imperfective verbs), past tense, or a wider vocabulary, the scope here is intentionally the highest-frequency present-tense verbs, not a full grammar reference.

Compared to other verb charts in the shop, this one shares its logic-based grouping approach with our German Verbs List, both organize by an underlying grammatical category rather than a surface-level ending pattern, but the categories themselves are different, German splits by regularity, Russian splits by conjugation type. That's not an inconsistency across the shop, it's each language's chart reflecting where that language's real complexity actually sits.

  • Instead of guessing which conjugation pattern a verb follows from its ending alone, you check which group it's actually in. The chart sorts verbs by real conjugation type, not just infinitive spelling, so a verb that breaks the usual -ать/-ить pattern is already grouped correctly, not left for you to misjudge.
  • Instead of holding two separate ending patterns in memory, you see them side by side on one page. First conjugation's "е" endings and Second conjugation's "и" endings sit on the same chart, so the actual difference between them, the one vowel that changes everything, is something you can compare directly instead of recalling from two different sources.
  • The 25 verbs that come up constantly in everyday Russian are already there, sorted and conjugated, so confirming how хотеть or любить conjugates takes a glance, not a search through a chapter index.
  • A few irregular and mixed verbs are included alongside the regular ones, because those are the verbs a beginner hits constantly in real conversation, not just the tidy textbook examples that follow the rules perfectly.

The list of verbs conjugated:

  • делать – to do / to make
  • говорить – to speak
  • знать – to know
  • жить – to live
  • идти – to go / to walk
  • есть – to eat
  • хотеть – to want
  • думать – to think
  • смотреть – to watch / to look
  • понимать – to understand
  • играть – to play
  • брать – to take
  • давать – to give
  • сидеть – to sit
  • работать – to work
  • стоять – to stand
  • лежать – to lie down
  • пить – to drink
  • спать – to sleep
  • писать – to write
  • читать – to read
  • помнить – to remember
  • любить – to love
  • слышать – to hear
  • ходить – to go (on foot, habitually)

What is a Russian Verb Conjugation Chart?

A Russian verb conjugation chart is a study reference that shows how common Russian verbs change form according to grammatical person, typically organized by conjugation type (First or Second) so a learner can see the correct ending pattern rather than looking up each verb individually. It's used for quick reference during study, conversation practice, or exam preparation.

A typical Russian verb conjugation chart includes:

  • Verbs grouped by conjugation type (First/E-type, Second/И-type)
  • Present-tense forms across all six grammatical persons
  • A mix of high-frequency regular and irregular verbs

Veelgestelde vragen

To conjugate Russian verbs in the present tense, you must first determine if the verb belongs to the First Conjugation (E-type) or the Second Conjugation (И-type). For First Conjugation verbs (mostly ending in -ать), you drop the infinitive ending and add: -ю, -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ют. For Second Conjugation verbs (mostly ending in -ить), you add: -ю, -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ят.

The difference between First and Second conjugation in Russian lies in the vowel used in the endings.First Conjugation verbs are characterized by the vowel "е" (e.g., ты читаешь), while Second Conjugation verbs use the vowel "и" (e.g., ты говоришь). While there are some irregular exceptions, most verbs ending in -ать fall into the first group, and those ending in -ить fall into the second.

There are two main verb conjugation groups in the Russian language: the First Conjugation and the Second Conjugation. While some "mixed" verbs like хотеть (to want) and бежать (to run) use endings from both groups, the vast majority of the Russian vocabulary follows these two predictable patterns.
