Italian verbs grouped by infinitive ending

The verbs on the chart fall into three groups by their infinitive ending. Six end in -are, for example parlare (to speak), fourteen in -ere, for example scrivere (to write), and five in -ire, for example dormire (to sleep). The -are group is the most predictable: parlare, lavorare, trovare and mangiare follow the regular pattern, and only fare and andare break it. The -ere group is the largest and the most irregular, with eight irregular verbs, including essere, avere, potere, volere and dovere, next to six regular ones such as vivere and leggere. The -ire group is split into two patterns: dormire and sentire take the plain endings, while capire adds -isc- in most forms (capisco, capisci, but capiamo, capite). Dire and uscire are irregular.
