This is a 16-page planning document structured around the 4 C's of Marketing, the framework introduced by Robert Lauterborn in 1990 as a customer-first alternative to the traditional 4 P's. Where the 4 P's start with what you sell (Product, Price, Place, Promotion), this framework forces you to start one step earlier: with the person you're selling to.

The document moves in a deliberate sequence. It opens with analysis pages, one dedicated section per C, in this order: Customer → Cost → Convenience → Communication. That order isn't arbitrary. You can't make a defensible pricing decision (Cost) before you understand who you're pricing for (Customer). You can't decide where and how to sell (Convenience) before you know what that customer is willing to pay. And you can't write a message that lands (Communication) before you've resolved the first three. Each C builds on the previous one.

After the four analysis sections, the document shifts from diagnosis to planning: a vision board, a growth plan, a compare & contrast page (useful for mapping yourself against a competitor or an older version of your strategy), risk management, resource requirements, a timeline framework, and a notes page.

The analysis pages come with pre-written prompts. You're not handed an empty box and told to "describe your customer", the prompts break each C into specific, answerable questions.

The structure, the prompt logic, and the page sequence are the same whether you open this in Canva or print the PDF. The only thing that changes is the medium. In Canva, you can retype, recolor, and relabel everything: company name, section headers, color palette. In the PDF, you fill it in by hand or in a PDF editor. The strategy underneath doesn't change.

This template is not a good fit for someone who needs a marketing calendar, a content schedule, or a campaign tracker. The 4 C's framework is a strategic analysis tool, it helps you define what your strategy should be, not manage the execution of one you've already built. If you're past the strategy stage and just need somewhere to plan posts, this is the wrong product.

CraftedCharts also sells a 4 P's Marketing Planner. The structural difference isn't cosmetic, the 4 P's template starts from the seller's perspective (what are we offering, at what price, through which channel, with what promotion). This one starts from the buyer's perspective. If you've already done a 4 P's analysis and it felt like it was mostly about you rather than your customer, this is the natural next step.

The document includes a vision board page which might seem out of place in a framework-based planning tool. It's not decorative. It sits between the analysis section and the operational planning pages because the 4 C's analysis tends to surface tensions: your pricing doesn't match customer expectations, your convenience is lower than competitors, your message says one thing but your channel says another. The vision board is where you resolve those tensions into a direction before you start building timelines and resource plans. Without it, people tend to skip from analysis straight to tactics, which is the exact mistake the 4 C's framework was designed to prevent.

What is a 4 C’s Marketing Planner?

A 4 C's marketing planner is a planning document used to build a marketing strategy around the four components of the Lauterborn framework: Customer, Cost, Convenience, and Communication. It guides the user through each element in sequence, providing prompts and dedicated sections to analyze customer needs, evaluate total cost to the buyer, assess accessibility, and define a communication approach. The output is a written strategy document rather than a campaign calendar or execution tracker.

Why use this 4 C's Planner?

Most marketing fails because businesses talk at their audience rather than with them. When you are too close to your own product, you often forget the problems your customers are actually trying to solve.

  • When you design your strategy around the customer, your message naturally lands better. People buy from businesses that feel like they "get" them.
  • By focusing on convenience, you learn how to make it dead simple for someone to choose you over a competitor. This tool helps you spot the little things that might be stopping a sale.

How to use this Planner

You need to be willing to look at your business honestly.

  • Don't skip the first section. Everything else flows from who you are serving. If you don't have a solid handle on your customer, your cost and communication strategy won't matter.
  • Use the prompts provided in the pages to challenge your own assumptions.
  • You aren't doing this for a grade. This is a living document. Print a copy or keep the digital file handy so you can refer back to it whenever you are planning a new campaign or thinking about launching a new product.

Veelgestelde vragen

The 4 C’s of marketing is a customer-centric model used to build brand strategy. It consists of Customer (replacing Product), Cost (replacing Price), Convenience (replacing Place), and Communication (replacing Promotion). This framework shifts the focus from what a business sells to how it provides value and ease to its target audience.

The 4 C's framework is ideal for small business owners, startups, and service-based entrepreneurs (like coaches or consultants) who need to build deep customer loyalty. It is also a vital tool for marketing students and professionals looking to modernize their strategic planning beyond traditional product-focused models.

The traditional 4 P's (Product, Price, Place, Promotion) focus on the seller’s perspective and business operations. In contrast, the 4 C's (Customer, Cost, Convenience, Communication) focus on the buyer’s journey. The 4 C's model is considered more effective for modern digital marketing because it prioritizes customer experience, relationship building, and total cost of acquisition over simple product features.
